SearchIn Agents work in conjunction with SearchIn Servers to manage any device that can serve up a network share. The SearchIn Agent can be installed either locally on a SearchIn Server called pull mode, or remotely referred to as push mode. The mode is set automatically based on the installation options specified, if a SearchIn Server and PC/Server Agent are installed together than the 'Pull' mode is active for the Agent. If only the PC/Server Agent install option is specified, and a SearchIn Server is NOT selected, than 'Push' mode is active for the Agent. In either mode, changes to the local file system's data are tracked and real-time updates are made to the index after the initial index scan operations have been performed. This enables the system to be setup in a flexible deployment architecture that is most optimal for your specific data management requirements or network configuration.

SearchIn Agents can be locally installed on a SearchIn Server to provide data extraction from files over remote network shares. When a SearchIn Server and PC/Server Agent are installed together (Pull Mode), content and metadata streams are extracted (pulled) from remote network shares available through the local file system and are built into indexes managed by the SearchIn Server on the same machine. Network shares may reside on NAS devices, or other systems acting as file servers such as Windows, Linux or Netware machines. This delpoyment alternative is ideals for managing closed NAS appliances such as NetApp Filers.

When the SearchIn Agent is installed remotely on another PC or server, only the data extracted from a file is transmitted over the network connection. When the PC/Server Agent is installed without a SearchIn Server on the same machine, then Push Mode is active for the Agent. The PC/Server Agent will only scan the locally attached storage devices and 'push' all extracted content and metadata to a remote SearchIn Server. A stand alone PC/Server Agent does not store indexes locally; the index is built and maintained with real-time synchronization updates performed only on a remote SearchIn Server machine. This eliminates network bandwidth consumption by as much as 90-95% over competitive approaches. Coupled with the Agents bandwidth usage tuning parameters, Agent can slip into your network quickly and easily without bring your network backbone down to it's knees.
